ACCOMODATION

THE BATHROOM :

In your bathrooms, you will find no toiletries or toilet paper. Think of it as moving to a new apartment and not into a hotel room :)

We advise you to put a toilet roll in your luggage for the first day of your arrival. Later, you can go shopping over the week.

THE BEDROOM :

On your arrival in the room, you should find:

The “Welcoming box” which contains a campus map, information papers, discount vouchers, Freshers Week program, a SIM card and other things. Also, one other thing is a convenience meal, in our case, either a noodle box or a pasta box along with a can of drink. Since this meal is quite small you might want to think about bringing something else to eat for the first evening. If not you can always buy food on the campus or nearby.

A Bedding Pack if you ordered and paid for it during the online enrolment process (I really recommend you do so).

An inventory form. Here you have to list all the furniture that is in your bedroom and the state it’s in. This paper has to be filled in before the end of the week of your arrival and put in a box which is found at the entrance of the hall.

THE KITCHEN :

In your kitchen, you have nothing in terms of food stuffs! When we say nothing we mean it ! Of course you have a sink, a cooker hood, cooker, an oven, table, storage units, a workbench, a mop, a broom and  a vacuum cleaner. There are also closets that you can lock with a little padlock. They are used to keep personal belongings. Please note there is no microwave. However, you can buy one but you must see the warden so he/she can grant an authorization for using it.

Items like dish towels, sponges etc can be bought in Scotland (no need to take up valuable space unnecessarily in your luggage for things that you can buy once there.)

In the kitchen there are no utensils but this isn’t a problem since the Chaplaincy normally organizes a free bric-a-brac where you can take all the kitchen utensils you need! However, think about others who are also in need and don’t be self-centered. You can come back anytime you wish during Freshers Week. if you realize that you forgot to take something you need.

Each week, the cleaning staff will come to clean your kitchen. Please note they may leave you written instructions on the piece of paper stuck to the kitchen wall. E.g. put the bins out, tidy the dishes up etc … If you do not respect these instructions or leave a messed up kitchen, you can pay a fine.

ATTENTION !

You need to keep in mind that the accommodation that you have in HWU is not an apartment. You have a bedroom and a bathroom to yourself but kitchen is shared between 5 people. You need to pay attention to security because all the students in the hall can walk down all the corridors in the hall. So if you leave your bedroom unlocked anybody can get in. Although, some doors lock themselves automatically, most doors must be locked manually.

If you lose your key, you can go to the Main Reception or see your Warden. A replacement key costs £35 but if you find your own key later, your £35 will be refunded.

If any problem arises with your room, you can contact the Maintenance team by e-mail. We discovered that they do not reply, they just come and do the repairs.

If the problem is urgent, contact your hall Warden directly.
